She is the Light in the Darkness by cheetahspirit She is the Light in the Darkness by cheetahspirit
A portrait of Layla, who is the great granddaughter of Suzie Haskew, founder of the Village Fine Arts Association in Milford Michigan. My primary goal with all of my portraits is to create something emotional and powerful, and take it as far as it can go. I wanted to capture her carefree innocence and the feeling that, within her eyes, there is a vast ocean of hopes and dreams. Even though I don’t know Layla very well, it was a very emotional piece to create.

Prismacolor pencils on Strathmore 400 vellum 4 ply (front side of the paper!). 24"w x 18"h. Reference photos by me. Art Photo by Eric Law.

Your art is amazing, I'm just been getting back into art and doing graphite.  I want to get back into color but from Art School it was hard for me since I'm color blind.  I just bought Caran d'Ache luminance pencils and would like to start off simple.  I see you use multiple pencil types, do you need oil and watercolor for the blending?  The reason I ask is I love the way I can blend my graphite.  If you go to my page, take a look at my grandfather I did, this is what I mean by blending.  Again, if you can't answer that's ok, I know you get tons of questions...anyway keep up the awesome work!

Darron, I don't use any mediums to blend with, I don't even use any paper or colorless blenders! I blend and burnish with the pencils themselves. The Prismas and Polychromos pencils blend well together, along with some special pencils called Stabilos. I sometimes use a Scrubber brush. For reflectivity with graphite, your best bet is to find a good archival spray that will not affect the tone of the paper. Hope this helps.

This is beyond description, I love everything about it, but I'd say the best is the gameplay with the light sources and overall saturation of the picture, the hair, the expressiveness of the eyes, and the folds of the dress on the collarline and how the yellow ambient light from behind her falls in it and besides brightening it also recolourizes it at the shoulder!

This is so beautiful! *-* her hair looks like strands of gold, and her skin and eyes are drawn so nicely!
I really think, along with the person below, that this should be on the cover.

I agree - it would make a great cover for Prismas - especially since they are almost all I use!
